Jane and the Unpleasantness at Scargrave Manor by Stephanie Barron

I started this series as part of a reading challenge. This is the first book in the series and there have been eleven written so far. This book read just like you would expect a Jane Austen Novel to read. Jane, herself is telling the story and in the telling of the story, you get to know the real Jane Austen. Stephanie Barron has managed to weave some of the real Jane Austen's life into the story. The book has footnotes to help with some of the language used during Jane's life, and I found the footnotes to be as interesting as the story. To be honest, I was a bit skeptical about this series of books and did not expect to like them. But, If they are all as well written as this first one, then I will read them all.

The story is about a friend of Jane's named Isobel. Isobel has recently married a man much older than herself, and Jane has come to stay with the newly weds for a Ball being given in honor of the bride. While there, Isobel's husband is murdered and then later on, one of Isobel's maids is brutally murdered. Isobel and the man she loves are accused of the murders and it is up to Jane Austen to help prove their innocence. I have always been pretty good at solving a mystery long before the story comes to an end, but this one kept me in suspense up to the end. If you love Jane Austen and you love mysteries, then you are sure to love this series by Stephanie Barron.
