" Fear is the strong passion; it is with fear that you must trifle, if you wish to taste the intense joys of living."
~Robert Louis Stevenson

This book should be on everyone's "To Read" list.  It is by far, one of the best books I read in 2016.  It was the first book I have read by Robert Masello, but it will not be the last!  I loved the way the story intertwined the past with the present.

The story combines a present day environmental scientist, Rafael Salazar, finding an old trunk, and the past with a journal by Robert Louis Stevenson found inside the trunk.  The journal begins on a trip Mr. Stevenson had taken for his health.  It provides information about the story, The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, written by Robert Louis Stevenson. In the journal, Mr. Stevenson promises to reveal the identity of Jack the Ripper.  However, when Rafael finds the trunk, he doesn't realize that the journal was not the only important object in it.  There was also a flask that contained the last precious drops of an elizir capable of causing horrific results.  Also, he doesn't realize that the flask has landed in the hands of the last person on earth it should be.

The story flows easily between the past and present time lines, and in my opinion, that is what makes the story so good.  It combined actual history with fiction, and this gave the story depth.  Once I started reading, I could not put it down.  After all, it began with,  What I must tell you now, I tell you with dread.  What a great opening line! So, does it identify Jack the Ripper? Well, you should read it and find out.  I promise you will not be disappointed.
